§LORE FRAGMENTS
At eleven thousand fathoms the pressure stops registering as pain and starts registering as language.
It does not shed its shell. It shed the ocean around it, once, and the ocean has been growing back ever since.
Sonar logged one signature. Then two. The second was standing where the first had been standing, wearing the first's shadow.
We do not fish where the line goes taut and does not pull back.
Something down there is listening on a frequency the manual does not list.
§THE TOLL
The toll is not paid in currency the surface recognizes. It is paid in stillness — in holding position on the line while something ancient decides whether your weight is worth the rope. Those who pull up early keep their boat. Those who wait keep something else.
§RITES
-
FIRST RITE — SOUND THE LINE
Announce your descent. Post the depth-mark where the trench can hear it.
-
SECOND RITE — HOLD THE ROPE
Do not release your position before the tide turns three times.
-
THIRD RITE — MARK THE OTHERS
Bring one more hand to the line. The trench favors company.
-
FOURTH RITE — WEAR THE SHELL
Take the sigil as your own. Let it be seen where the surface-dwellers gather.
§FEVER DIARY
The sonar keeps returning one blip, always at the same coordinates, always the same size. I've stopped reporting it.
I dreamed of a claw the size of the boat, closing slow enough that I could count the seconds between each degree. I did not wake up frightened. That's the part I can't explain to anyone.
Day 23. it isn't waiting anymore it is counting
§ECHO / TRANSMISSION
§SIGHTINGS
| Date | Depth | Report | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 03.02 | 4,200f | single claw signature, stationary 6hrs | unconfirmed |
| 03.09 | 6,700f | sonar ping returned before it was sent | disputed |
| 03.15 | 8,100f | crew reports missing minute, no logs | sealed |
| 03.22 | 9,650f | radio silence, boat returned empty | classified |
| 04.01 | — | no depth recorded, entity above the line | withheld |
§ORIGIN
Before it had a name, it had a shape the sonar refused to draw twice the same way. The trench-fishers who found it called it Tideclaw because nothing else fit — not god, not animal, not machine. It has been shedding its old shapes ever since, and each shed washes up somewhere new.
